Creature Comforts Brewing Co.

Creature Comforts is a growing, independent brewery in Athens, Georgia. Creature Comforts puts care and attention towards making several different types of beer for the local community and surrounding markets.

We love our city and were so excited that a brewery was opening up down the street from the studio. We were even more excited when they called upon us to build out their online identity and product designs, and our partnership with Creature Comforts has flourished ever since. We created the core can template and over a dozen individual can product designs for Creature Comforts in a style that boosts brand recognition, but also balances that brand uniformity with an illustrative identity.

The website needed to be dense. The cult following amassing was palpable. Young Athenians built a knowledge base that could meet the hype of this blooming brewery. We wrote and designed an online identity that the brewers could take over and run themselves. Our typography for a poster and the website have gone on to become the brand’s core typography and are used through out their advertising and merchandising. Our work for Creature Comforts has been reproduced world wide and has amassed a celebrity fan base. Most recently two of our cans TROPICALIA® and ATHENA®were featured in MARVEL AVENGERS: ENDGAME.

TROPICÁLIA®

Designed for Creature Comforts Brewing Company’s delicious fruity IPA. Tropicália® is a balanced, soft, and juicy IPA. A hop aroma of citrus and ripe passion fruit leads into a full, fruit-forward hop flavor that washes over the palate, and ends with a subtle bitterness. Tropicália is also the name of a Brazilian artistic movement that started in the late 1960s. It is best known today for its music, which merged Brazilian and African rhythms with rock and roll.

Young Athenians began our relationship with Athens, GA based Creature Comforts in 2011, creating 'Tropicália' 2 years before the brewery launched. The can has since come to represent both the brewery and Athens, GA design ingenuity, coming in ahead of the curve on the tropical design explosion of the past few years. Design blog THE DIELINE in a glowing review remarked, "I know it's going to draw attention in the design community & most likely winning some awards along the way." Tropicália is now available in select Georgia markets. The proportional colorblocking / landscape / seascape geometry of the can has since been nailed down as the brand’s core visualization strategy. We are proud to have created a color block that immediately identifies a Creature Comforts beer.

ATHENA®

Athena is a refreshing, gently tart German-style wheat beer. Our take on the classic Berliner Weisse is brewed with a house blend of lactobacillus, which imparts notes of citrus, cider, and sauvignon blanc. In 1809, Napolean’s troops dubbed the Berliner Weisse “The Champagne of the North.” That’s why we call Athena the "Champagne of the South,” as a tribute to our hometown of Athens, Georgia.

In tribute to our goddess Athena, Young Athenians drew the Goddess walking down Washington Street and by the her grace wheat has grown through the street. Our surreal illustration has been turned into a series of Athena cans, Athena Paradisio with Cherry, Athena Paradisio with Guava, and finally Tritonia.

TRITONIA®

Designed for Creature Comforts Brewing Co. By Young Athenians; Tritonia is a tart and refreshing Gose (4.5%abv) with hints of coriander and sea salt. This variant of Tritonia will feature the addition of cucumber and lime. The tartness of the beer and addition of lime is perfectly balanced by the cool freshness of cucumber.

BIBO®

Bibo [Pilsner] - Bibo (pronounced bēbō) is a true pilsner with ingredients from five different countries that has a pronounced continental hop flavor and aroma in an incredibly well-balanced package. We use an enormous amount of the classic Czech Saaz and a touch of Motueka hops from New Zealand to put a new world twist on this beautiful old world style. Motueka offers a subtle pineapple note that underlies a harmony of the traditional black pepper, herbal, and cracker grain character pilsners are famous for. Bibo is dry, quenching, and frankly amazingly delicious.

“I DRINK” aka BIBO required a whiff of authority. Creature Comforts Brewers wanted this lager’s can to feel prestigious so we incorporated 18c Guilloché, a decorative technique in which a very precise, intricate and repetitive pattern is mechanically engraved into an underlying material via engine turning, which uses a machine of the same name, also called a rose engine lathe. Guilloché traditionally has been used to create official documents and currencies world wide. We thought it was a perfect match to the creative brief of a beer that requires a level of distinction and prestige.

KOKO BUNI

Koko Buni is a lovely milk porter brewed and aged on toasted coconut, cocoa nibs from Athens' own Condor Chocolates, and coffee from our collaborators at 1000 faces. The name actually comes from the raw ingredients we use in the beer. Koko means coconut in Papiamento, a common language in parts of the Carribean, while Buni means coffee in Swahili, a common language in southeastern Africa.

The flavors of this beer are rich and velvety like a warm camp fire, which also is the perfect setting to share with your friends. Mentally take a journey there or to whatever is your perfect autumn evening while enjoying Koko Buni.

Young Athenians were proud design a beer that was sure to become a winter staple. We solicited the illustrative help of one of the local art heros, David Hale. Hale is an Athens, Georgia based illustrator who is gaining a cult following. The collaboration proved an award winning one.
